U.S. Mint Releases 2013 Preliminary Production Schedule

The preliminary production schedule for the 2013 United States Mint numismatic run has been released and collectors everywhere are pretty pleased.  For starters, this production schedule is in full, unlike last year when we had to wait for sections of the schedule to be released bit by bit.  In fact, 2013’s run is laid out with specific dates listed for each of the most highly anticipated products.

Highlights of the 2013 U.S. Mint Production Schedule

Standing out the most are a few specific products that are creating an exciting buzz in the collector’s circle.  For starters, the American Eagle West Point Two-Coin Silver Set is slated for release between May 13th and June 13th.  Speculation is that these dates will coincide with the 75th Anniversary of the West Point Mint, although true aficionados will recognize this as the 76th year.  While no specifics have been released to date, experts are deeming this release to be fairly close to the past year’s 2012 San Francisco Silver Eagle Set.  If so, expect both proof and reverse marks meaning this would be the first Silver Eagle proof with the “W” mark that is the West Point Mint’s classic marker.  In addition to this, it will also be the 3rd consecutive year that Silver Eagle Sets have been released under the ‘anniversary’ banner.  Could we be seeing the beginning of an era here?

Additionally, excitement is brewing about the announcement of the release of the 2013 Girl Scouts Silver Dollars on February 28, 2013 and the 2013 5-Star Generals $5 Gold Coins, Silver Dollars, and Half Dollars on March 21, 2013. This pretty much affirms thoughts on the next two years commemorative sets from the U.S. Mint.

Changes and Speculations

A few changes have also been made in this year’s production run, most notably some changes in typically low-sale items.  For starters, a few products that experienced low sales will in fact return including the collectible uncirculated version of the American Gold Eagle and the America the Beautiful Quarters Three Coin Sets.

Other products weren’t so lucky to get a second chance including the First Spouse Gold Coins and the related Presidential $1 Coin and First Spouse Medal Sets. Further, the 100th anniversary set of the American Gold Buffalo coin is blatantly absent.  Although this was highly hinted at by the U.S. Mint, the absence of the announcement during the preliminary schedule does not necessarily mean that it won’t be produced. Bolstering these hopes is the fact that the First Spouse Gold Coins are mandated by law—something that collectors are looking at with a sigh of relief.
