The numismatic year came to a close a few days ago for the United States Mint production line, marked by the final releases of the year. Tuesday, December 20th saw three releases including the Frances Cleveland (Second Term) First Spouse Gold Coins, the Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set and the First Spouse Bronze Medal Four Medal Set.
Frances & Grover Cleveland (Second Term) Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set
The Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set was released this past Tuesday in honor of the second term Grover Cleveland served as President of the United States of America. Unlike other presidents whose two terms were consecutive, President Cleveland’s were not, making this coin unique in the collection. Previously, on November 20th, a separate set was released commemorating his first term.
Each of these latest sets include one Grover Cleveland Presidential Dollar and one Frances Cleveland Bronze Medal mounted on a plastic card. On the front of this card, a depiction of the President and First Lady is shown while the back contains issuance information about the set. Each set is priced at just $9.95 with no product limits or household ordering limits established.
Although sales for these products have been generally weak over the past year, the uniqueness of this set (as marked by the previous set only commemorating his first term) has speculators predicting that this set will do better. In comparison, the first set released contained Chester Arthur and Alice Paul and sold 3,386 units while the Benjamin & Caroline Harrison set has sold 1,111 units as of the most recent sales report.
2012 First Spouse Bronze Medal Series: Four Medal Set
The U.S. Mint also released the First Spouse Bronze Medal Four Medal Set which contains each of the First Spouse Bronze Medals that were issued in 2012. The set contains medals featuring Alice Paul Suffragist, Frances Cleveland (First Term), Caroline Harrison, and Frances Cleveland (Second Term).
The set of medals are packaged in a fully customized envelope with the issuance information being contained on a folded card. Each of the four bronze medals were struck at the Philadelphia Mint sans mint mark and are 1 5/16th” thick. The United States Mint will not be offering these medals for individual sale unless you purchase the First Spouse Bronze Medals or the Presidential $1 Coin & First Medal Sets, you will be missing out.
The medals are priced at around $4.25 per piece, making the set cost $16.95. Also still available are the First Spouse Bronze Medal Four Medal Sets from 2010 and 2011, both similarly priced at $16.95 each.
2012 Coming to an End, 2013’s Production Run Looming
With the year coming to a close, most collectors are already looking ahead to the 2013 releases. The preliminary release schedule has already been set and the lineup is pretty exciting. That begs the question of how these last releases of 2012 will fare; will they slip through the cracks as collectors ramp up for next year or will the uniqueness of the double Grover Cleveland release find its way onto investor’s charts?
